To obtain a copy of your marriage certificate, you may either complete the Application for Marriage Certificate at the counter, print out and fill in the Marriage Certificate Request Form (PDF), OR include the following information in a letter:
The name of Party A (including maiden name if applicable).
The name of Party B (including maiden name if applicable).
The date and place of marriage.
Relationship to the person whose certificate is requested.
Your handwritten signature and complete return mailing address
If one of the parties was born out of wedlock, only the bride or groom may obtain the record and positive identification will be required, such as a driver's license. Also, these cannot be mailed to a post office box address.
PLEASE NOTE: Failure to provide all of the above information will result in the application being rejected or delayed in processing.
IMPORTANT: In addition to your written request, you must include the necessary fees. Make your check or money order payable to the City of Boston.
Absolutely no telephonic requests or verifications will be accepted.
Fees for Marriage Certificates
If obtained in person at City Hall, the fee is $12.00 per copy (no surcharge).
Hours of Operation
Monday and Tuesday between 9:00a.m. and 4:00 p.m.;
Thursday and Friday between 9:00a.m. and 4:00 p.m.;
Closed Wednesdays and WeekendsIf obtained through the mail, the fee is $15.00 (includes $3.00 surcharge)*
3 to 4 week wait for mail requests* the surcharge is for the entire order, not per copy.
For example: two certificates @ $12.00 each = $24.00 + $3.00 fee=total due $27.00
For records prior 1870 an additional research fee of $10.00 per record is required.
All fees are payable by cash, check, or money order.
