Inspectional Services Department

The Inspectional Services Department (ISD) is comprised of five regulatory divisions whose aim is to protect and improve the quality of life for all Boston residents by effectively administering and enforcing building, housing, health, sanitation and safety regulations mandated by City and State governments.

Building Division
We revamped the Building Division section of CityofBoston.gov to provide clearer information and easy access to ISD resources. The new pages guide you through the permitting, plans, and zoning processes associated with changes to your home or to a structure.

The Boston ISD Housing Division conducts rental inspections and enforces the State Sanitary Code. Apply for an inspection, report violations, or learn about landlord responsibilities, tenant rights, elderly & disabled housing security, and more.

Change to Use of Premises Application Process

Effective Friday, February, 1, 2013, The Inspectional Services Department can no longer accept the Use of Premises applications for Residential Parking before Public Works Department approval.
