Beat the Heat

During the hot summer months, heat stroke and heat related illness can be a huge issue. Follow these steps to ensure a safe and fun summer for all!

DO

  • Drink lots of water and stay hydrated 
  • Check on elderly persons
  • Rest often in shady areas

DON'T
  • Underestimate the seriousness of heat-related emergencies!
  • Drink alcoholic or caffeinated beverages
  • Overexert yourself or work outside without taking breaks

City Cooling Centers & Pools

BCYF Community Centers are open normal hours for the public to stop by and cool off.  There are also 10 Community Pools open 7 days per week this summer! See list below, or please call the Mayor's Hotline at 617-635-4500 for the cooling center closest to you.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation owns and operates many pools in and around Boston.

Elderly

Call the Elderly Commission at 617-635-4366 or the Mayor's Hotline at 617-635-4500 (after hours) to report issues.

Seniors can use the 'Senior Shuttle' service for transportation to cooling centers during declared heat emergencies. Additional information is available by calling the Elderly Commission at 617-635-4366.


Homeless

Extremely hot weather poses additional hardships for homeless people who may be elderly, disabled, suffer from medical conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure, or who take medications that cause sensitivity to the hot sun. We encourage you to look out for homeless people who may be in distress.

  • Utilities & Power Outages

    If any areas are without power, residents should call NSTAR at 1-800-592-2000 or call the Mayor's 24 Hour Constituent Service at 617-635-4500 with concerns or questions and report outages.

  • Fire Hydrants

    Residents are reminded that fire hydrants should not be tampered with or opened; doing so may hinder fire extinguishing capabilities.
