Animal Care and Control

Boston's Animal Care and Control unit offers a variety of services to Boston residents. Its mission is to provide responsive, efficient animal control services, to provide a high quality of animal care and to promote responsible pet ownership. Its officers travel over 100,000 miles each year in Boston to fulfill its public safety and service mission.

Animal Control Officers

  • Enforce pertinent legal ordinances and laws governing animals.

  • Investigate cases of animal abuse and respond to incidents as requested by citizens as well as requests for assistance from the Boston Police, Fire and Inspectional Services departments and Boston's Emergency Medical Service.

  • Are responsible for inspecting licensed animal kennels, veterinarian hospitals, pet groomers and special animal exhibitions.


Programs & Services Unique to Boston

  • The City of Boston operates its own Animal Shelter in Roslindale staffed by a full time veterinarian to care for the animals in our custody.
