The Training Division is responsible for the training and development of all Boston EMS EMTs and Paramedics. Boston EMS is only as strong as the skills of its workforce. Therefore the Department provides its field personnel with regularly scheduled Continuing Education Classes and Refresher Training Courses, both of which meet or surpass the standards set by the State. Additionally, all new EMTs and Paramedics are required to complete intensive training programs through Boston EMS’ accredited Training Academy. The Academy, a leader in quality EMS education, prepares our EMTs and Paramedics to deliver unparalleled service.
Under the leadership of our Medical Director and her team of EMS physicians, Boston EMS training staff and outside lecturers provide monthly Continuing Education Classes and Refresher Training Courses designed to ensure that the skills of our workforce are sound and sharp. Classes are used to review case studies, new and existing treatment protocols, and the proper use of new equipment, among other things. All of the Refresher Training Courses and monthly Continuing Education Classes meet or exceed the recertification requirements of the State Office of Emergency Medical Services and the Federal Department of Transportation guidelines for basic and advanced EMT training.
The Boston EMS Training Academy is the heart and soul of the Boston EMS Training Division. The Academy prepares aspiring EMTs and Paramedics for emergency medical service with Boston EMS through a rigorous didactic and field internship training curriculum.
While the Commonwealth of Massachusetts only requires individuals to earn basic EMT certification in order to serve as emergency medical technicians, Boston EMS requires its field personnel to complete additional training. After earning certification at the State level and upon successful completion of an internal written and practical test and interview with Boston EMS, recruits are required to complete a rigorous 6-month training program that consists of classroom work, field instruction, exercises, and drills. As part of our Training Academy, recruits must prove that they are physically and mentally prepared to deliver high-quality medical care to the citizens and visitors of Boston.
Similarly, members promoted to Paramedic enter into a demanding classroom and field training internship program. Paramedics are promoted from within the Department, ensuring that they have ample field experience on the streets of Boston. In addition to being certified at the Paramedic level by the State, Boston EMS Paramedic interns receive an additional 80 hours of operating room and emergency room rotations, 120 hours riding as a 3rd member with a veteran ALS crew and 360 hours on an ALS unit staffed with a Field Training Officer who evaluates the Paramedic-interns’ skills. Only after successful evaluation by the Field Training Officers and Boston EMS physicians are candidates promoted to Paramedic.
