Harold W. Cummings, Jr.

Harold Warren Cummings, Jr. was born on February 21, 1941. He resided on Rockwell Street in Dorchester with his wife, Denise Cummings. Harold displayed his love for our country when he enlisted in the United States Army on November 9, 1966. Private First Class (Pfc.) Cummings proudly served with the 669th Transportation Company, 54th Transportation Battalion, 8th Transportation Group. Every day over 200 trucks from the unit would haul ammunition, food, and other commodities across 150 miles of treacherous mountain terrain, from Qui Nhon to Pleiku, to keep soldiers supplied. On December 4, 1967 Pfc. Cummings was driving the lead gun truck in a convoy in Binh Dinh, South Vietnam. The convoy was ambushed, and he was shot and killed by small arms fire. For the heroism and valor displayed in combat, Pfc. Cummings was awarded the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Gallantry Cross. His body is buried at Mount Hope. |
