Dedication John J. Alcorn United States Coast Guard 28 September 1922 – 1 November 1945 John Joseph Alcorn was born on September 28, 1922 in South Boston. He grew up on East 7th St and graduated from South Boston High School. John showed his love for his country when he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard on August 19, 1939. Machinist's Mate Third Class (MM3) Alcorn proudly served on a Patrol Torpedo (PT) boat squadron. He was declared Missing in Action between November 16 and November 30, 1942 due to gunfire from Japanese aircraft. MM3 Alcorn was declared a casualty of the Battle of Guadalcanal and presumed dead on November 1, 1945. His body was never recovered, and he is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing in the Manila American Cemetery. MM3 Alcorn was awarded the Purple Heart for the heroism he displayed in his service to our country. John was survived by his mother Agnes Alcorn.
