Douglas A. Young United States Marine Corps 12 April 1949 – 18 February 1968 Douglas Allen Young was born on April 12, 1949 in Dorchester, MA. He resided in Dorchester until enlisting in the United States Marine Corps on April 25, 1966 to fight in the Vietnam War. He was a Lance Corporal and Rifleman in L Company, 1st Marine Division, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines. He served at Camp Pendleton and in Hawaii before going to Vietnam. Douglas arrived in Vietnam on August 4, 1967. He was wounded on Christmas Day, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart, but returned to duty with the 5th Marines. On February 18, 1968, LCpl Young was on a combat patrol in Thua Thien Province when the Marines received several rounds of harassing small arms fire. LCpl received a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was killed in action at the age of 18. Douglas is honored for his service on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., his name inscribed at VVM Wall, Panel 40e, Line 16. Douglas was survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Young, as well as his 14 siblings.
