Dedication John W. Ahern United States Navy 22 September 1917 – 3 March 1944 John W. Ahern was born on September 22, 1917 to William and Rebecca Ahern in South Boston, MA. John graduated from Boston Technical High School. He was inducted into the United States Navy on April 22, 1940. Machinist's Mate Second Class (MM2) Ahern proudly served aboard the naval submarine chaser USS SC-1024. On March 2, 1944 SC-1024 was in a northbound convoy along the US east coast. While off the coast of North Carolina, a southbound convoy suddenly appeared on a collision course. Despite hard turns from both ships, the SC-1024 struck the USS Plymouth. Soon after, the SC-1024 was struck and capsized by tanker SS Cities Service Fuel. Along with the entire crew, MM2 Ahern was presumed dead on March 3, 1944. Their bodies were never recovered. For his sacrifice in defense of our country MM2 Ahern is memorialized on the Tablets of the Missing at the East Coast Memorial in New York, NY. John was survived by his parents.
