James J. Tierney United States Army Unknown – 7 May 1918 James J. Tierney resided in Chelsea, Massachusetts until he entered the United States Army to serve in World War One. He was a Corporal in the 26th Division, 101st Infantry Regiment. Alongside the French Army, the 101st made a raid into German lines on February 23, 1918, marking the first time an American unit had launched a raid in the war. On May 7, 1918 Corporal Tierney died of wounds received during the 1918 German Spring Offensive. He posthumously received a Purple Heart. Corporal James J. Tierney is memorialized at St. Mihiel American Cemetery, Plot B, Row 4, Grave 32, in Thiaucourt, France.
