THOMAS D. AMORY

Thomas Dwyer Amory was born on October 17, 1893 to Mr. and Mrs. Edward J. Amory in Duluth, MN. He was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute. Thomas showed his devotion to our country when he enlisted in the United States Army from Massachusetts shortly after the US entered World War I. First Lieutenant (1Lt.) Amory was sent to France in September 1917, where he proudly served in the 26th Infantry Regiment, 1st Division. On October 2, 1918 he led a patrol of 64 men into enemy lines in order to reconnoiter terrain. When the patrol took machine-gun fire from all sides, 1Lt. Amory led three of his men forward to clear the machine-gun nests. He overcame one, but was shot through the head while advancing on the next. His last words were "We will take that nest or die trying." 1Lt. Amory was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action. His body is buried at the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery. Thomas was survived by his parents.
