Hamilton Coolidge United States Air Service 1 September 1895 – 27 October 1918 Hamilton Coolidge was born on September 1, 1895 in Brookline, MA. He was the great-great-great grandson of Thomas Jefferson.Hamilton displayed his love for our country when enlisted in the United States Air Service. He was admitted into the Curtiss Flying School in Buffalo, NY in July 1916. On June 5, 1917 he entered the School of Military Aeronautics at MIT. Starting on June 16, 1918 Captain Coolidge proudly served with the 94th Aero Squadron. He was considered a WWI Flying Ace. On October 27, 1918 he was leading a protection patrol, when 2 observation planes were being attacked by 6 German machines. The German ground forces set up a heavy barrage with anti-aircraft guns, he fearlessly carried on with the assistance straight into the barrage. His plane was struck and went down in flames. Coolidge was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He is memorialized at King's Chapel Burying Ground in Boston.
