EUGENE ZANNI

Eugene Thomas Zanni United States Army 8 October 1897 – 23 July 1918 Corporal Eugene T. Zanni was born in Boston, MA on October 8, 1897. He served in Company H, 9th Regiment, Massachusetts National Guard (M.N.G.) on the US Mexican Border Service.The mobilization and training in the Mexican Border Service helped prepare the Massachusetts National Guard for combat during World War I. He went to France during World War I with the same regiment having been merged with the 101st Regiment, Yankee Division. During the Second Battle of the Marne, he was killed in action by machine gun fire at Chateau Thierry on July 23, 1918. He was 20 years old. He was initially buried in France. However three years later his remains were returned home to the United States. His parents Regina Mary and John (Giovanni Baptiste) Zanni, who immigrated from Italy, held a funeral for him on July 25, 1921. For the heroism he displayed in his service to our country, Zanni was awarded the Purple Heart. Zanni was survived by his parents Regina Mary, John Zanni and nine siblings.
