Street Lighting Division

The Street Lighting Division handles all lighting systems owned by the City of Boston. The Division also has the final say on design, specifications, construction, and maintenance methods of privately owned street lighting systems.

This division manages City-owned lighting systems like roadways, bridges, underpasses, pedestrian walkways, parks, and playgrounds.

Out lights are recycled by Veolia Systems, located in Stoughton, MA.

Request More Lighting on Your Sreet

The City will survey your street to see if adding lights is possible. If possible, this division will install them.

The City will survey your street to see if brighter lights are possible. If possible, this division will install them.

    Street Lighting LED Program Receives Leading By Example Award

    The Public Works Street Lighting Division's LED streetlight program recently received  the 2011 Leading by Example Award from the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. The Leading by Example Awards recognizes outstanding efforts that result in significant and demonstrable energy and environmental benefits. Public Works Commissioner Joanne Massaro accepted the award on behalf of the City of Boston from MA Energy and Environment Secretary Richard Sullivan.
