“Today, the Senate passed a balanced and thoughtful FY13 budget that includes important provisions to improve public safety in the City of Boston.  I applaud Senator Jack Hart of South Boston for his leadership in ensuring concurrent police jurisdiction on certain MassPort properties. Currently, Boston Police are hamstrung in the South Boston Waterfront due to an outdated state law that gives the Massachusetts State Police exclusive authority on MassPort properties. This made sense when this area only consisted of a shipping port, but now it is home to a thriving Innovation District, residences, and some of the best restaurants and attractions in the City. Our goal is to give residents and visitors of Boston the benefit of protection of both the State Police and the Boston Police, and I am committed to providing additional Boston Police resources and manpower to ensure the highest level of public safety in this neighborhood.  I look forward to working with Governor Patrick and legislative leaders to ensure that the citizens who live, work, and visit the South Boston Waterfront have the same level of local police action as those who reside in other parts of the City.”
