Mayor Thomas M. Menino has announced that the 9th GospelFest will take place on Sunday, July 19, 2009, from 5– 8 PM on City Hall Plaza. The popular gospel event provides a platform for both contemporary and traditional gospel and features both local talent and national headliners. The headliner of this year's festival is Israel Houghton & New Breed.

Grammy-winning Israel has been acclaimed as one of Christian and Gospel music's foremost worship leaders, songwriters, recording artists and producers. A former member of Fred Hammond's talented vocal aggregation, Radical For Christ, Israel has worked with gospel superstars CeCe Winans, Donnie McClurkin and Yolanda Adams while winning the admiration of such notables as Maurice White (Earth, Wind & Fire), Ron Kenoly and Gary Oliver. Israel recorded the Grammy winning "Alive in South Africa" in Capetown in 2007 and his 2005 album "Live from Another Level" won a Dove Award. Israel Houghton recently returned to his roots as a solo artist with the release of the album "The Power of One."

Israel & New Breed has appeared on three power-packed praise and worship albums: The 2001 "Hosanna! Music," the 2002 Integrity Gospel CD "Real," and the aforementioned "Live From Another Level." They also have appeared on numerous albums recorded at Lakewood Church with worship leader Cindy Cruse Ratcliff.

Also on this year's program is local act, LeRoy Streat with Grace. For over 15 years LeRoy has been writing, playing and producing Christian worship music, and has led music ministries in Europe and the United States. In 1995, LeRoy helped form one of Boston's most exciting new worship teams – Gracesingers.

This year's program will also feature the Anointed Biblical Scriptures singers. Created eight years ago, they are a singing ministry whose mission is to spread the gospel through songs. Their motto and theme song is "I Will Spend All My Life Serving God," and they try to live up to that obligation.

Rounding out the program is Ayana McDonald. Her gift has allowed her to travel across the country and overseas with a message of hope and love for the masses. She is the recipient of numerous awards such as Alpha Kappa Alpha Outstanding Youth Award, The National Organization of Women's woman of achievement award, and the Links foundation community service award. In 2005, she was awarded a full tuition scholarship to study at Berklee College of Music where she recently graduated with a B.A. in Music Business & Management.

GospelFest 2009 is produced by the Mayor's Office of Arts, Tourism & Special Events in partnership with Metro Boston and John Hancock.
