According to the autopsy report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, Rene Romain died on July 14, 2001 from one gunshot that entered his body through the right side of the abdomen, and exited through the right side of the buttocks.

Romain was shot while attempting to stab a Boston Police Officer. Within the next several weeks following a comprehensive review, representatives from the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and the Boston Police Department will meet with the Romain family.
