Former HCAC Members & Responsibilities

The Committee consisted of 5 members, originally appointed by the Mayor, and voluntarily have an open and transparent process. Members advised the Mayor on issues concerning efforts of establishing a resort destination casino in the City of Boston, pursuant to the following responsibilities.

The Host Community Advisory Committee was established by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino to ensure integrity, accountability and transparency regarding the potential establishment of a resort destination casino in the City of Boston.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the interests of the residents, families, businesses, and visitors of Boston are the utmost priority throughout all efforts to establish a resort casino in the City of Boston;

  • Work with the City of Boston, in an advisory capacity, to ensure the City's and all relevant interests are appropriately represented in the Host Community Agreement;

  • Engage public opinion through public meetings as well as community and online forums;

    • Expectation is to hold community meetings and be available to meet with and advise the Mayor and city officials;

  • Provide transparency and expert and diverse views concerning City of Boston decisions related to the establishment of a resort casino in Boston;

  • Offer independent guidance concerning the siting, authorization, construction, and operation of a resort casino in the City of Boston; and

  • Advise the City of Boston on potential impacts, policies, and best practices related to the establishment of a resort casino.

Brian Leary, Chair

Brian LearyMr. Leary works with some of the nation's largest companies in planning and implementing strategies for high stakes problem-solving, including the coordination of litigation defense, government relations, and communications strategy. Leary was also a reporter/anchor for Boston's WCVB-TV.

  

 

Sarah Barnat
Vice President of Development, National Development and East Boston resident
Sarah BarnatWhile previously working at Trinity Financial, Ms. Barnat was Project Manager for the Maverick Landing HOPE VI development in East Boston. She has significant experience leading a dynamic team of consultants, as well as interacting with public agencies and tenant organizations.
