Guidelines by
The Boston Transportation Department
for use by the Zoning Board of Appeal
The Transportation Guidelines are designed to ensure that proposed development is consistent with the character of the surrounding neighborhood and promotes the efficient use of land. The Guidelines will help maintain the economic value and long-term desirability of proposed projects in Boston.

The Zoning Board of Appeal adopted the Transportation Guidelines on July 22, 2003. Although the Transportation Guidelines were developed to assist with decisions by the Zoning Board of Appeal, BTD strongly recommends that all developers follow the Transportation Guidelines.

The Transportation Guidelines address the following topics:
A Transportation Access Plan Agreement is required for projects that follow the Article 80 Large Project Review process. Large Project Review is broadly defined as erecting a structure having a gross floor area of 50,000 or more square feet.
