Mayor Menino

City of Boston Scholarship Fund

Mayor Thomas M. Menino explains the origins of the City of Boston Scholarship Fund, and thanks constituents as well as students for their involvement with the fund from its beginnings.

Dear Friends:

I want to thank you for visiting our City of Boston Scholarship Fund website. This site is to provide you with basic information on the Fund: how it was established, who serves on the Scholarship Selection Committee and how to contribute. But the strongest endorsement comes from the student recipients themselves, who write to us year after year to say how the Fund has benefited them.

When I was a Boston City Councilor, I took advantage of a state statute that enabled cities and towns to establish a scholarship fund and to collect money through real estate and auto excise tax bills. Since its establishment in 1994, the City of Boston Scholarship Fund has grown, thanks to the generous contributions of Boston taxpayers - and the many others who have attended our scholarship fundraisers. What is particularly heartening is the sheer number of people who donate annually to the Fund. Some Boston residents are only able to contribute a dollar. Yet combined, these contributions have made a difference in the lives of scores of Boston students.

Each year, a group of outstanding Boston students are awarded scholarships to begin their college careers. In addition, recipients are assured of on-going support, provided they maintain strong grades.

I invite you to learn more about the City of Boston Scholarship Fund - and to 'meet' just a few of its grateful scholars on these pages. Thank you for your interest.

Best regards,
