Enrollment Guidelines
Your responses to questions one through five are very important because your answers directly impact your retirement contribution rate. The correct rate, at the outset of your enrollment or re-enrollment, eliminates potential, costly problems at the conclusion of your tenure. So please answer to the best of your ability and knowledge. Should you need any clarification or assistance regarding these questions, call Member Services at (617) 635-4311.
Contribution Rates
  • HIRED prior to 1/1/75 5%
  • Hired between 1/1/75 TO 12/31/78 7%
  • Hired between 1/1/79 TO 12/31/83 7% + 2%
  • Hired between 1/1/84 TO 6/30/96 8% + 2%
  • Hired 7/1/96 to present 9% + 2%
*** Please note that all members who entered (or reentered the State-Boston Retirement System after taking a refund) on or after January 1, 1979 and who earn $30,000.00 or more per annum are subject to the additional 2 percent withholding.

If the City of Boston or another Massachusetts municipality, state agency, authority or county department/agency previously employed you and you did not withdraw your funds; your retirement contribution will remain at the same percentage rate deducted by your preceding employer. If you withdrew your funds, you must contribute at the current contribution rate.

If you have withdrawn your contributions and you wish to "buy-back" creditable service towards your retirement allowance, you may do so. Your re-deposit is not a mandatory but a voluntary decision and payment includes the withdrawn amount plus interest to the date of repayment. Payments can be made on an installment basis. A redeposit of previously withdrawn contributions has no affect on your current contribution rate.

If you were a member of another Massachusetts Public Retirement System, all accumulated deductions and corresponding creditable service will be transferred to SBRS.
