Chapter 176 of the Acts of 2011 “An Act Providing for Pension Reform and Benefit Modernization” provides for certain increased benefits for certain retired members and survivors. Some provisions will be implemented by the Boston Retirement Board an do not need member action but the following two new provisions require action by eligible retirees:
Creditable Service for Pre-1975 Maternity
Teachers who took a maternity leave of absence or retired from teaching due to maternity prior to January 1, 1975, and who retired as of September 1, 2000 at less than 80% maximum benefit shall be allowed a maximum of creditable service not to exceed four years. Same Sex Marriage Option Change
Members and surviving spouses of such members who entered into a same sex marriage between May 17, 2004 and May 17, 2005, and who retired on or before May 17, 2004 under Option A or B, are allowed to change their retirement option to Option C. Pension System Software Update
The Boston Retirement Board is undergoing a replacement of its present pension system software to an entirely new system. This conversion will take place from January 24, 2013 until February 8, 2013, during which the Board’s capabilities will be limited to informational requests and counseling.
