Marriage

Before you can get married in Massachusetts, you need a Marriage License issued in Massachusetts. An out-of-state license cannot be used and you cannot use a Massachusetts license outside of this state.

  • Marriage Licenses

After filing a marriage intention, there is a three calendar day waiting period before you can pick up your license. This license can only be used in Massacusetts.

  • Marriage Ceremony

Once you have your license, you must bring it to the officiant of the wedding. Officiants are Massachusetts Ministers, Priests, Rabbis, Justices of the Peace, or individuals with a valid One-Day Marriage Designation who may perform the ceremony.

  • Marriage Certificates

The Registry has records for couples whose Marriage License was issued in Boston or were married prior to 1983 and listed Boston as their residence. Certified copies of marriage certificates are available after the Registry has received the completed license from the person who performed the wedding ceremony.
