Snow Operations
Over five hundred and fifty contract and City pieces of equipment are available during deicing and plowing operation of all public ways in the City of Boston.

The Global Positioning System (GPS) was utilized during the FY06 winter snow and ice operations and quickly became an important inspectional and operational tool. Over four hundred (400) mobile units were deployed in contracted equipment. Each mobile device, monitored at our operations center, was updated in one minute intervals. Each update tracked the location, speed and direction of the device. The web based GPS monitoring application has several features that enable the user find vehicles in seconds and pinpoint the closest mobile units to an address where an emergency has occurred. These attributes have enhanced the efficiency and public safety elements of our operations. Beginning on July 1st of 2006, all seventeen contracted mechanical day street sweepers will also utilize a similar GPS program.
