Paint & Motor Oil Recycling
Saturday drop-offs of surplus paint, stains, varnishes and used motor oil at public works yards in four neighborhoods. Open to all Boston Residents (Proof of Residency is Required).
 

Paint Swap Shops

Paint which is in good condition is made available to residents for free. Come take free paint from our Swap Shops. We have interior and exterior paint and stains.

 
 
Acceptable Materials

Latex Paint

  • Interior and exterior latex paint
  • Water based paint tubes
  • If container is less than half full, let dry and place in trash

Oil Paint

  • Interior and exterior oil based alkyd paint
  • Oil based paint tubes
  • Solidified oil-based paint
  • No lead based paint
  • No creosote

Stains/Varnishes

  • Stain, varnish, lacquer, polyurethane
  • Solidifies stains and varnishes
  • No mixing stains/varnishes
  • No creosote, wood preservatives or bleach

Paint thinner

  • Usable thinner
  • Usable paint remover
  • Paint stripper
  • Linseed oil
  • Turpentine
  • No mixing paint remover, thinner or stripper

Motor oil

  • No transmission fluid accepted
  • No anti-freeze accepted
  • Motor oil only
  • No empty cans
NOTE
  • Paint and motor oil are not accepted from commercial businesses.
  • Paint, stains, varnishes, thinners not in original containers or with illegible labels will not be accepted. There is a 20 container maximum.
  • No erosal paint cans
 
 
Drop Off Schedule & Locations

All drop off sites follow the schedule below:
Saturdays, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., May through October.

1st Saturday of the month: Roxbury Public Works Yard, 280 Highland St.

2nd Saturday: Hyde Park Public Works Yard, 58 Dana Ave.

3rd Saturday: Brighton Public Works Yard, 315 Western Ave.

4th Saturday: East Boston Public Works Yard, 320 East Eagle St.
