Street Lighting Division

The Street Lighting Division is responsible for providing an adequate, modern, aesthetic, efficient lighting system for all roadways, bridges, underpasses, pedestrian walkways, parks and playgrounds under the control of the City of Boston. The Street Lighting division operates as a clearing house for all street lighting in Boston. Whoever installs or maintains street lighting on City streets, the Division has the final say on design, specifications, construction, and maintenance methods.

    The Public Works Street Lighting Division is working to convert street lights from traditional lighting sources, such as mercury vapor and sodium, to LED.

    The Boston Public Works Street Lighting Division is not responsible for maintaining lighting on roadways, parks, or playgrounds owned/managed by the Massachusetts Department of Construction and Recreation, the Massachusetts Turnpike, Mass Port Authority, Mass Highway, or any Economic Development Industrial Corporation. The Street Lighting Division is also not responsible for sports field lighting (please contact Parks and Recreation about sports field lighting). Please do not place requests for lights in these vicinities.
