TRACE Program

The Boston Police Department partnering with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Criminal History System Board (CHSB), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and Trace, a private company, has created a new program designed to assist in identifying stolen property.

The Trace program will provide a mechanism to allow the Boston Police Department to gather the necessary information from the public so as to enter stolen property from Boston into the FBI's NCIC stolen property database as well as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts CHSB stolen property database. In this way stolen property information can be shared by all of law enforcement throughout the Country. In addition the TRACE Program will create a new database that will be available to the public. The database available through TRACE will provide an avenue for the public to send identifying information such as serial numbers to the Boston Police Department so that they can better investigate the crime. Through TRACE it will also allow the public a means to query articles they may come in contact with to see if they have been stolen.
