Ownership: Golden Stairs - Boston Conservation Commission; Rockies - Boston Parks and Recreation Department
Neighborhood: East Boston
Description:
These two abutting sites are located along Marginal Street in the Jefferies Point neighborhood of East Boston. The Golden Stairs site consists of a concrete stairway traversing a steep grade from Marginal Street to a small sitting area at the top of the slope. The Golden Stairs provides residents with access between Marginal Street and the Jefferies Point neighborhood. The quiet sitting area also provides spectacular views of the harbor and downtown Boston. The Rockies is a grassy hillside just west of the stairs that provides an open, expansive meadow, breaking up the dense residential character of the neighborhood. The Rockies is one of the largest undeveloped spaces in this part of East Boston and provides some of the only remaining upland wildlife habitat in the area. The grassland and adjacent shrubby thicket is particularly attractive to migrating songbirds and butterflies.
