Greater Boston Urban Forest Inventory
Community Forest Partnership (CFP)
& the Boston Parks Department

The Parks Department, as an active partner in the Community Forest Partnership (CFP), is working closely with CFP, the Urban Ecology Institute, Tufts University, and Mapping Sustainability to design a Continuous Complete Inventory of the urban forest in Greater Boston.

The Boston Parks and Recreation Department is the lead agency for policy, planting, and maintenance of public shade trees as defined by Massachusetts General Laws, Chapter 87. The department has a comprehensive vision for the health of the city's urban forest and includes an inventory of street and parkland trees, a community education and stewardship program, and an inter-department and municipal exchange around public trees. Tufts University's Academic Technology Department created a customized ArcPad application for the tree inventory and will provide GIS Interns to update the database. Mapping Sustainability is a private GIS and Environmental Consulting firm that provides environmental and economic problem solving. Mapping Sustainability will perform remote sensing classification and CITYgreen analysis for this proposed study. The Community Forest Partnership is a coalition of public and private partners in the Boston area that supports and assists communities to envision and design restoration projects in their neighborhoods, become better engaged in their environment, and to expand and improve the urban forest in Greater Boston.

The data presented here was gathered during a pilot of the inventory training module and the inventory software. If you are interested in becoming involved with the inventory, please contact urbanforestry@ci.boston.ma.us (subject: Greater Boston Urban Forest Inventory) or call Sherri Brokopp/CFP Director at (617) 552.1563.
