Internship Opportunities
As caretaker of the city's open space, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department oversees 2,200 acres of park land including 215 parks and playgrounds, 65 squares, urban woodlands and street trees, three active cemeteries, 16 historic burying grounds, and two golf courses. In addition to maintaining the historic integrity of such famous landmarks as Boston Common, the Public Garden, and the other parks comprising Frederick Law Olmsted's Emerald Necklace, the Parks Department services and upgrades facilities ranging from tot lots to the 527-acre Franklin Park. The Department also programs a wide range of community events and live entertainment in the parks under its jurisdiction.

The Design and Construction Unit of the Parks and Recreation Department retains plans for construction in the city's parks. The plans document more than a century's work in the city parks. As such they represent a valuable asset in need of comprehensive review and assessment. The Unit seeks an intern with an interest in library sciences, historic landscape preservation, and/or document conservation to assist in the organization and protection of these resources. Intern will report to the Chief Landscape Architect.
Specific duties will include:
- Assess condition of plans
- Cross reference plans with existing indexes
- Organization of plans and documents
- Research best practices and sources of support for management of historic documents
- Develop recommendations for storage and retrieval
HOURS: 20 hours per week (flexible)
SALARY: Unpaid (will work with school for college credit)

Intern will report to the Marketing Director and Director of Event Development, who possess first-hand experience of the internship process. The Marketing Department has a clear understanding of what the student should gain from the internship experience and how it complements the formal academic process. The intern will be exposed to the core responsibilities necessary for a future position in the communications, political and/or consulting fields. The Department will assist interns with the preparation of resumes and writing samples.
This internship will provide broad exposure to all facets of public relations in a busy city government department including media and community relations, inter-governmental affairs, marketing, special events, client relations, and corporate sponsorships. Specific duties will include:
- Assist with execution of special events including park openings, special events, concert series, and fundraisers
- Assist in the preparation of briefings and speaking points for events
- Assist with media relations including press releases, advisories and media follow-up
- Assist with research to identify sponsors
- Assist with compiling and disseminating sponsorship proposals
- Assist with scheduling Mayoral engagements at Department events
- Manage news clipping system
SALARY: Unpaid (will work with school for college credit)

This internship will provide limited exposure to the diverse role and responsibilities of the Boston Park Ranger Mounted Patrol Unit. The opportunity will specifically provide the intern(s) a working experience with the care and training of horses and general stable management. Position is ideally suited for those individuals considering pre-veterinary studies, large animal care, or careers in stable management.
Intern will report to a Boston Park Ranger Mounted Unit Supervisor who will have experience with the internship process. Specific duties will include but not be limited to:
- Basic handling
- Feeding and watering
- Grooming, clipping, and bathing
- Mucking and bedding
- Tack and equipment maintenance
- Basic veterinary care
- Basic farrier care
- Transportation
SALARY: Unpaid (will work with school for college credit)
TRANSPORTATION: Vehicle is clearly preferred due to location of main offices in Franklin Park. Public transportation is available but not direct.

The Permitting Unit is responsible for scheduling over 200,000 hours of athletics and special events annually. The internship will expose each student to the daily operations of a major urban parks system. Students will have a variety of observational and "hands-on" experiences both in the office and out in the field. The Department will assist interns with the preparation of resumes and writing samples. Students may have the opportunity to assist in the following areas:
- Assist with park management
- Assist with scheduling
- Assist with data entry
- Assist with special event management
- Assist with community policing partnerships
- Assist with Permitting Unit page on City of Boston website
- Assist with vending agreements
