Mayor Martin J. Walsh has announced that the City of Boston’s two municipal golf courses - the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park in Dorchester and the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park - will be fully open for business on Saturday, April 5, weather permitting (please call golf courses for availability).
“Boston’s golfers are a determined bunch,” Mayor Walsh noted. “Back in the 1970s a small group of dedicated players banded together to bring the William Devine Golf Course back to its former glory and the facility has grown better and better ever since. We now have an award-winning course in Franklin Park and the Donald Ross-designed George Wright in Hyde Park giving golfers two great municipal courses to choose from right in the city.”
Both golf courses underwent improvements in 2013 including renovations to the majority of the first fairway at the George Wright. The first and second tees were expanded and additional bunkers were added on the first and second holes. Improvements completed at the William J. Devine include an expanded ninth hole tee complex which added new forward and rear tees and renovated greenside bunkers.
The George Wright was named in Golfweek’s “Best Courses You Can Play” as the #8 overall course in Massachusetts for 2014 and the top municipal course in Massachusetts for 2013 and will be the site of the 2014 U.S. Amateur Qualifier for New England on July 8. Golf Digest named the William J. Devine as one of their “Best Places to Play” three years in a row and will be hosting the Fairway Ladies MGA Rules of Golf Seminar on April 16 and a qualifier for the MGA 2014 Massachusetts Amateur Championship on June 16.
Both courses feature full pro shops, concessions, cart rentals, and lessons for all ages. The courses are owned and operated by the City of Boston through the Fund for Parks and Recreation and will be open daily from dawn to dusk. Golfers can access information on rates, season permits, and tournaments at www.cityofbostongolf.com where they can also register for monthly giveaways, online news, and specials. For immediate course updates, the City’s golf courses can be followed on Twitter @FranklinParkGC and @GeorgeWrightGC.
