The Boston Transportation Department is advising drivers that, effective this evening, Avenue de Lafayette in Downtown Boston, from Chauncy Street to Harrison Avenue Extension, will become a two-way street.  Avenue de Lafayette from Harrison Avenue Extension to Washington Street is already a two-way street.  The change is being made in cooperation with the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District and other local interests to improve traffic circulation in the area.

New traffic signal equipment, signs and pavement markings will be in place to help drivers to navigate the new traffic pattern.  The change is expected to reduce the number of vehicles that inadvertently enter the Downtown Crossing pedestrian only zone, and provide easier access from Downtown Crossing to the highway system, the Greenway and Chauncy Street.

The Boston Transportation Department will monitor the effects of this change on local streets and make modifications as necessary.
