Along with cities and towns across the country, and the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, the City of Boston will be celebrating “National Electric Car Plug-In Day” on Sunday, September 23, 2012. Mayor Thomas M. Menino has declared Sunday to be “National Electric Car Plug-In Day in the City of Boston” and a variety of electric vehicles will be stationed on the Boston Common from 9 AM to 2 PM on Sunday for residents and visitors to learn more about and view.
The electric vehicles that will be displayed include the:
- Ford C Max Plug-In Hybrid
- Toyota Plug-In Hybrid
- Nissan Leaf
- Chevy Volt
- Chevy Spark
- Mitsubishi I MiEV
- BMV Active E.
- Technology that is advertised to convert a Prius to a Plug-In will be available as well.
The electric vehicle display will be a component of the Boston Cup Classic Car Show that will be showcasing numerous vintage vehicles on the Boston Common.
In 2011, EVboston was kicked off to promote the use and accessibility of electric vehicles in the City. At that time, Boston’s first on-street charging stations for electric vehicles were unveiled on Cambridge Street at City Hall Plaza. Three parking spaces were set aside for the exclusive use of electric vehicle owners who need to recharge vehicle batteries. The Cambridge Street initiative is a pilot program designed to study the use and durability of the charging units and to help guide future implementation plans for electric vehicle stations in Boston. These charging stations, and others located in off-street parking facilities in the City, have been provided by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources which granted 22 electric vehicle charging stations to the EVboston project. There are now a total of 55 electric vehicle charging stations in Boston.
EVboston is part of the Boston Transportation Department’s Complete Streets initiative, a multi-project effort with the goal of accommodating all modes of travel on Boston’s roadways, designing green, environmentally friendly streets, and using new, smart technologies to improve mobility.
