Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings

Renowned Funk/Soul Band to Kick Off The Boston Arts Festival on Friday, September 7.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino and  presenting sponsor Liberty Mutual Insurance have announced that the 10th annual  (ähts):  The Boston Arts Festival will take place on  Saturday, September 8 and Sunday September 9  from Noon to 6 PM, at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park.  For the first time, this year’s festival will feature a kick off concert, headlined by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, on Friday, September 7, at 6:00 PM.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, is a band at the forefront of a revivalist movement that aims to recapture the feeling of soul and funk music as it was at its height in the late 1960s to mid-1970s. Despite trying to forge a career as a professional singer since an early age, it has only been in her middle age that Jones has experienced breakthrough success.

Ms. Jones’s voice evokes at once the raw power of Tina Turner, the moaning soulfulness of Mavis Staples, the rhythmic swagger of James Brown, and the melodic command of Aretha Franklin. The “Daptone Sound” at its finest and is a welcome breath of fresh air.  But, most of all, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings are a celebration of, and a testament to, the soulful and beautiful possibilities of music.

Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, The Colbert Report, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Lopez Tonight,  CBS News, NPR, CNN, VH1, BBC Television, MTV, and many more, as well as a print publications, including feature stories in Newsweek, New York Magazine, The New York Times Sunday Magazine and Arts Section, Mojo, USA Today, The New York Post, The Village Voice, The Washington Post, and Entertainment Weekly.
