State and local leaders urged residents to stay cool Tuesday as temperatures hit the upper 90s. Boston EMS was busy all day responding to heat-related calls. “A lot of it is just the dehydration that we’re getting. A lot of the calls are coming in as minor illnesses because a lot of folks don’t realize that they’re dehydrated,” said Captain Jose Achilla, Boston EMS.

Even Governor Deval Patrick battled the oppressive conditions and urged everyone to keep an eye on neighbors. “I just ask everybody, check on your neighbors. Especially elder neighbors or people who were for other reasons shut in,” Governor Patrick said.

The stifling heat made it tough for firefighters who battled a 2-alarm fire in Cambridge Tuesday morning. They had to rotate crews in so others could cool off. “Drink some water, go into the house and in the air conditioning for a little while,” said Mike Tucci.

There’s a science to beating the heat for people who work outside. “Try to get your deliveries over with early, and just take your time and try not to overdo it. And just stay hydrated. That’s all you can do really,” said Brian Kelleher, Staples deliveryman.

Boston EMS says they plan to keep extra patrols out through the night
