The City of Boston has announced weekday specials for golfers at the William J. Devine Golf Course in Dorchester featuring discounted greens fees with cart rental Monday through Thursday of $42 for residents and $47 for non-residents.
In addition, the Department announced that there are openings for beginner’s golf lessons in July and August. Get Golf Ready is designed to teach adults everything they need to play golf in just a few lessons. Participants focus on the various golf skills they will use while playing. In addition to learning the basics, they will be guided onto the golf course to put their skills into action in a casual, friendly setting.
Week One begins with an introduction to golf etiquette, putting and chipping basics; Week Two introduces the rules of golf full swing fundamentals; Week Three focuses on full iron swing development with on-course play and etiquette; and Week 4 includes full wood swing development, on-course play, and a review of the rules of golf.
May and June slots for the Get Golf Ready program sold out but July and August classes still have openings. Classes are held at the William J. Devine Golf Course Wednesday evenings from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on July 11, 18, 25, and August 1 with a second session August 8, 15, 22, and 29. The fee is $79 for Boston residents and $99 for non-residents. Class size is limited. Participants are welcome to bring their own equipment or use the golf clubs and equipment provided. In the event of inclement weather, please call ahead as the indoor clubhouse facility may be used for that evening’s class.
To apply, go to www.cityofbostongolf.com or call (617) 265-4084. The City of Boston also operates the George Wright Golf Course in Hyde Park. Both courses are owned and operated through the Fund for Parks and Recreation and feature full pro shops, concessions, cart rentals, and lessons for all ages. The golf courses can be followed on Twitter @FranklinParkGC and @GeorgeWrightGC.
Golf Digest named the William J. Devine Golf Course at Franklin Park as one of their “Best Places to Play” three years in a row. The second-oldest public golf course in America, the William J. Devine measures 5,961 yards from the blue tees. Part of the historic Emerald Necklace, the golf course offers a pleasant inner-city golfing experience only minutes from downtown Boston and is open year-round, weather permitting.
