Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced that the City’s Inspectional Services Department (ISD), in collaboration with the Boston Police and Fire departments, has completed a three day code sweep of rental units located at Gardner, Pratt, Linden and Ashford Streets in Allston, an area heavily populated with students.  ISD will again be in the area tomorrow at 12 PM to follow up with students, distributing pamphlets with information on rental housing resources and how to protect themselves from potential health and safety hazards.

“Boston is home to thousands of students, and they all deserve a safe place to live,” Mayor Menino said. “We will not allow landlords to take advantage of students by neglecting their properties and putting people at risk. We also want to make sure that renters in Boston, particularly students, are aware of their responsibilities as tenants. We will continue to work with the student community as well as landlords to ensure a safe environment for everyone.”

The inspections and outreach follow a three alarm fire at 84 Linden Street on January 22 which left one student in critical condition and sent others to the hospital.  City officials inspected the safety of interior and exterior dwellings, use and occupancy, and the structural integrity of the buildings and found more than 40 violations at 25 dwellings.

During the three day sweep, the team performed inspections of 25 dwellings resulting in the issuance of over 40 violations stemming from:

  • Non-functioning/missing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors,
  • Faulty heating systems,
  • Rodent infestation,
  • Student overcrowding,
  • Blocked egresses
  • Illegally occupying attic and basement space

The team conducted code compliance inspections of the following properties:

  • 5 Ashford St.
  • 12 Wadsworth St.
  • 41 Ashford St.
  • 42 Gardner St.
  • 65A Gardner St.
  • 27 Ashford St.
  • 5 Ashford St.
  • 49 Gardner St.
  • 53 Gardner St.
  • 98 Gardner St.

Students are reminded to look out for these types of violations when renting housing.  If your unit does not appear to be in compliance with these important housing and sanitary codes and the landlord is not responsive to these issues in a timely manner, tenants are encouraged to call Inspectional Services at 617-635-4500.  The City’s Rental Housing Center is also available to answer tenant questions.
