Mayor Thomas M. Menino and Boston Centers for Youth & Families’ (BCYF) Executive Director Daphne Griffin are pleased to announce that the Boston Neighborhood Basketball League (BNBL) is currently accepting registrations for teams to compete in the 42nd annual summer season; for individuals who wish to be placed on a team and for youth interested in the Pee Wee program.  The registration deadline is Friday, June 17th.

The BNBL season officially begins on Tuesday, July 5th.  Teams must register by June 17th.  There is a $10 registration fee for teams to participate in BNBL.  Registration forms can be picked up at BCYF’s Administrative Offices (1483 Tremont Street in Mission Hill), picked up at any BCYF community center, or downloaded now by clicking the “recreation page” link at www.cityofboston.gov/bcyf.  The league will end on Friday, August 20th after the conclusion of all playoff games.

BNBL also includes a FREE Pee Wee Developmental program for boys and girls ages 6-10 is offered at the Gallivan Community Center in Mattapan, the Roslindale Community Center and the Shelburne Community Center in Roxbury.  This program teaches young players the basics of basketball in a fun and non-competitive setting.  Space is limited and spots can be reserved by calling the centers directly.

The Boston Neighborhood Basketball League is the oldest municipal basketball league in the country and serves over 3,000 young men and women in four divisions: Pee Wee, 13 and under, 15 and under, and 18 and under.  In celebration of BNBL’s 40th anniversary in 2009, The Sports Museum created an exhibit entitled A League of Our Own: The Boston Neighborhood Basketball League.  The exhibit, which is presented by The Boston Foundation and is located on Level 6 of The Sports Museum opposite Suite 644 and 645, celebrates the rich heritage and enduring legacy of the BNBL.  It contains vintage photographs, trophies, and other artifacts that celebrate the founders, legendary players and alumni that have gone on to achieve success. The exhibit also includes photos of the championship teams from the league’s 40th anniversary season.

BNBL has sites all over the city at various BCYF community centers and local parks. For more information please call or e-mail the League Co-Director, Woodley Auguste, at 617-635-4920 x2116 or Woodley.Auguste@cityofboston.gov.
