Mayor Thomas M. Menino today announced that as many as 163 small businesses throughout a dozen participating Main Streets districts have festively decorated their store windows as part of the City’s inaugural Deck the Windows of Boston Main Streets contest, a friendly competition that tests business’ creativity in three categories: best representation of local style and history, most inviting for customers, and most festive. The contest was announced one week ago at the kick-off to the City’s annual Holidays on Main Streets campaign, which took place at a local business in West Roxbury.

“Deck the Windows is another reason to visit the neighborhoods during the holiday season. In addition to the tree lightings and special events taking place, we want to encourage folks to get out and see the decorated windows,” said Mayor Menino. “We’ve had a great response to the contest so far – we know our business owners are having fun with it, and we hope that the voters will get into the spirit and vote for their favorites later this week.”

This week, a panel of local neighbourhood judges will select the best window display of their Main Streets district and submit that contestant to the Department of Neighborhood Development’s Office of Business Development. Beginning on Friday, December 10th, Mayor Menino will ask members of the public to vote for their favorite five storefront windows.

The top five selected through the voting process will be visited by a panel of local celebrity judges (to be named this Friday) during the weekend of December 18th, and the best three windows will be honored on Tuesday, December 21st at a holiday celebration hosted by Mayor Menino at the winning business.  Contest details and a complete list of participating businesses by district can be found on the City’s website.
