Mayor Menino Signs Proclamation Encouraging Volunteerism
Proclamation declares September 11, 2009 as a “Day of Service and Remembrance”

Today, Mayor Thomas M. Menino signed a proclamation declaring September 11 a “Day of Service and Remembrance” in the City of Boston. The proclamation was sent to the Mayor and other elected officials across the country from President Obama’s senior advisor Valerie Jarrett as a way to honor those who died in the tragic events of September 11, 2001.

“I am proud to sign this proclamation for the City of Boston,” said Mayor Menino. “In Boston we have always had a very strong sense of community and a tradition of helping others. This proclamation not only serves to honor those who died in the tragic events of September 11, 2001 but also to remind us of how we came together as a country and community.”

The proclamation encourages people to volunteer their time and ability throughout the year to serve their community in commemoration of the thousands of first responders who immediately and without concern for their own well-being rose to service in a heroic attempt to protect the lives of others still at risk during the attacks.

“The tragic events of September 11, 2001 inspired Americans to come together in a remarkable spirit of unity and compassion,” said Valerie Jarrett in her letter to Mayor Menino. “It was a stark reminder that our fate as individuals is inherently tied to the fate of our nation. On that day, and the weeks that followed, we were unified in our response.”

The proclamation also references the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, signed by the President in April. For the first time ever, the Act includes the authorization and Federal recognition of September 11 as a “National Day of Service and Remembrance.”

“This is a great way to encourage people to volunteer,” said Don McGough, Director of Mayor Menino’s Office of Emergency Preparedness. “Under Mayor Menino’s leadership, the Office of Emergency Preparedness is training groups of volunteers in neighborhoods across the city to serve on Community Emergency Response Teams. The CERT volunteers will educate their neighbors about the importance of individual and family preparedness, and also be ready to support the City and their communities in the event of an emergency.”

Mayor Menino also highlighted other opportunities for Boston residents to volunteer, including with the Boston Police Department’s Neighborhood Watch program and the Public Health Commission’s Medical Reserve Corp.
