Boston EMS, Lifeguards Save Boy
This afternoon, Boston EMS and DCR (MA Department of Conservation and Recreation) are praising the response of staff at a near drowning at the DCR pool in Brighton. Just before 5 p.m., DCR lifeguards pulled a 12-year-old boy from the pool; he had a pulse, but was not breathing. Upon arrival, Boston EMS met with Boston firefighters and two lifeguards performing rescue breathing. Boston EMS’ Paramedic 16 and Ambulance 9 worked to continue rescue breathing as well as other treatment and the boy began responding better, following commands with a good pulse. He was then rushed to Children’s Hospital. The original 911 call came in at 4:50 p.m.
“This is an outstanding case,” Boston EMS Chief Serino said. “It looks as if everybody along the way did the right thing, starting with the phenomenal job of the lifeguards who acted quickly and called for help.”
“DCR lifeguards go through a rigorous training process and they bring a tremendous skill set to all of DCR’s waterfront facilities,” said DCR Commissioner Richard K. Sullivan. “I could not be more proud of the team at the Reilly pool and the teamwork they displayed this afternoon.”
Rescue breathing is part of CPR, making sure oxygen and blood continue to flow to the heart and brain. CPR is a life skill that anyone can learn. More information about CPR courses can be found at www.cityofboston.gov/ems.
