Today Boston Inspectional Services’ Weights and Measures Inspectors issued a $375.00 fine to American Airlines for continued use of a condemned scale. On December 11, 2008 inspectors conducted inspections of airline scales at Logan International Airport. During the inspection, Inspectors found American Airlines using a scale that was out of balance and providing inaccurate readings. American Airlines was then told not to use the equipment until it has been recalibrated by a repair company and re-inspected.
However, while conducting phase two of the scale inspections, Inspectors noticed the airline was using the condemned machine. The airline was ordered to immediately cease from all usage of the machine. Although it is not a violation to have a scale condemned, it is a criminal violation to continue to use it, in defiance of the law. With the costs of travel and luggage fees on the rise it is extremely important that the Airlines pay due diligence to the accuracy of the calibration of scales.
As of today, Inspectors have inspected over 111 luggage scales. Out of the 111 luggage scales, 99 luggage scales have passed inspection. Inspectors found 12 faulty luggage scales of which four were not working properly and eight were condemned.
