Hannaford helps fill “gift boxes” for Food Bank on City Hall Plaza

Mayor Thomas M. Menino today joined representatives from Hannaford Supermarkets, The Greater Boston Food Bank, and FedEx for a one-day can drive on City Hall Plaza. In partnership with the ongoing Mayor’s Food & Fuel Campaign, Hannaford donated 1,500 cans to kick-off the drive. The collected donations were displayed on three larger-than-life wooden “gift box” structures with the theme of universal giving for the holiday season. FedEx donated their services to deliver these can donations to the Greater Boston Food Bank.

“Our efforts are needed more than ever, and I’m proud that we’ve had so many partners step up to help individuals in need,” Mayor Menino said. “In this tough economy, hunger is a rapidly growing problem in our city and across the nation. More people than ever are facing a winter where they simply cannot stretch their budgets any further. Today’s donations will help put food on the table for many less fortunate families.”

Today’s event comes on the heels of the annual Boston Can Share program in November, an annual food drive sponsored by Mayor Menino, the Mayor's Advisory Committee on Hunger, FedEx, The Greater Boston Food Bank, and Project Bread. The program engages businesses as well as civic and community organizations in the effort to combat hunger in Boston by collecting donated food as well as monetary contributions. This year, with increased community partnership and more than 138 corporate partners, Boston Can Share collected 63,000 pounds of food for the Greater Boston Food Bank and other food pantries and has raised $27,000 for the Mayor’s Fresh Food Fund. This is double the collection rate for last year.

Mayor Menino's Food & Fuel Campaign, which began in August, is an ongoing partnership among government, businesses and non-profit organizations that are helping residents and small businesses address the rising expense of food and fuel. Since launching, the campaign has hosted a number of events, beginning with the September Food & Fuel Summit, to connect residents with food- and fuel-related assistance and informational resources. As part of the campaign, the City has partnered with community organizations and local grocery stores to host a series of community dinners, called Neighborhood DISH (Dinner, Information, Socializing, and Healthy recipes). Each dinner brings together 150-200 residents for a healthy meal to meet neighbors, share resources, discover City and community services, and take home a bag of non-perishable foods.
