Blog is part of Mayor’s Food & Fuel Campaign
Just in time for Thanksgiving, Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Public Health Commission have launched a new blog called Healthy Food on a Budget. The blog will feature advice from Kathy Cunningham, a registered dietitian and senior program manager at the Commission’s Chronic Disease Prevention and Control Division, on how to trim food costs while maintaining a healthy diet. In addition to Cunningham’s weekly feature, readers can post their nutrition questions and get a response, as well as post their own tips about healthy eating on a budget.
The blog is part of Mayor Menino’s commitment to helping Boston residents and small business owners address the rising costs of food and fuel. In September, Mayor Menino launched the Mayor’s Food & Fuel Campaign and hosted a summit to introduce residents to food programs, healthy cooking, fuel assistance, and weatherization.
“This blog series is a great opportunity for Boston families to share cost-saving tips, especially as we head into the holidays and the winter season,” said Mayor Menino. “With a click of the mouse, parents can access the advice of a registered dietician, who, as a Boston resident herself, has shopped in many of the same stores they have and can share her insights.”
Cunningham, a Dorchester resident, has more than 20 years of experience as a community dietitian promoting a cultural approach to nutrition, health, and wellness that is inclusive of families of diverse backgrounds and incomes. As a working mother of three children, she faces many of the same challenges as Boston residents: balancing the food budget while creating healthy, enjoyable meals for the entire family.
“I have found that, as I work with Boston residents, they frequently have great ideas and resources for affordable, culturally relevant food sources and recipes,” Cunningham said. “The blog offers an easy way for residents to share those ideas.”
Along with the blog, podcasts on Healthy Food on a Budget will be recorded as part of the Commission’s ongoing Boston Health Click podcast series. Both can be accessed by going to
