Asks Voters to Donate at Polls on Election Day
Mayor Thomas M. Menino today stood alongside community partners from the Greater Boston Food Bank, the United Way, Project Bread, and FedEx to launch the 22nd Annual Boston can Share Food Drive at Shaw’s Supermarket in the Prudential Center. Last year, Can Share worked with over 100 community partners to raise 103,000 pounds of food, totaling 131,000 meals. This year’s effort comes after Mayor Menino launched the first-ever Food and Fuel Campaign in August to address the rising costs of nutritious food and home heating oil. Boston Can Share mobilizes residents and community partners in an effort to end hunger, a critical public health issue.
“This winter, we are going to have to work harder than ever,” Mayor Menino said. “In this economy, hunger is a rapidly growing problem in our city and across the nation. The impact of hunger is something we see at the 86 food pantries and dozens of after-school programs in our neighborhoods on a daily basis. We have tremendous support from our partners at The Greater Boston Food Bank, Project Bread, FedEx, the United Way, and Shaw’s, but I am asking everyone to get more involved this year.”
Mayor Menino also announced that the City has partnered with the United Way through the organization’s Community Support Fund, which has contributed $300,000 in direct funding to the Mayor’s Food and Fuel Campaign. Mike Durkin, CEO of the United Way, joined Mayo Menino in asking people to help boost participation in Can Share by bringing donations to polling locations on Election Day. On November 4th, all polling locations in Boston will have Can Share boxes accessible for contributions from voters, making donation convenient for the thousands of voters expected to turnout for this historic election. The push for Election Day donations has the potential to become the largest one-day food drive in New England’s history.
“One week from today we are going to see a huge outpouring of people voting on Election Day” Mayor Menino said. “People know that their votes can make a real difference in the direction of our economy and our country, and I want to ask them to help us fight hunger in Boston as well. We know Boston is a world-class city of neighborhoods, but in times like these, we become a city of neighbors.”
Boston Can Share, now in its 22nd year, joins Boston's business and civic community and City Hall departments in the effort to combat hunger in Boston by collecting donated food as well as monetary contributions. Participating companies and organization designate a coordinator, who promotes the food drive to their co-workers, and Boston Can Share provides materials such as posters, brochures, and special Can Share boxes used to collect donations.
For the month of November, in offices, community centers, schools, and businesses throughout the city, Can Share boxes will be filled by community partners. Collected food as well as monetary contributions will help replenish the shelves of the Greater Boston Food Bank during the critical high demand holiday season. Monetary donations contribute to the Fresh Food Fund, a fund providing fresh produce to households in need. As a lead sponsor of Boston Can Share, FedEx picks up donations free of charge from every location for delivery to the Greater Boston Food Bank. The food is then distributed to pantries in Boston as well as soup kitchens and shelters.
Donations can also be made through a Corporate Matching Program in which companies match their employees’ food donation with a cash donation. Individual checks can be made out to “Boston Can Share,” care of the Emergency Shelter Commission, Room 716, Boston City Hall, Boston, MA 02201.
