Mayor Urges Residents to Have Fun, Be Safe this Weekend as Temperatures Rise

6/6/2008 - Released by Mayor's Office

With temperatures expected to top 90 degrees this weekend, Mayor Thomas M. Menino has issued a heat advisory and reminds residents to prepare for the hot weather by taking precautions to stay healthy. It is also a great time for Boston residents to take advantage of some of the great offerings in the city, such as the basketball related activities that the NBA Nation event has brought to City Hall Plaza in celebration of the Boston Celtics being in the NBA Finals. The City’s parks will also certainly be a great option for those looking to relax in the warmth.

“Everyone should enjoy the weather, but be safe while doing so. Children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses and injuries, but everyone should remember to limit their activities during very hot weather,” urged Mayor Menino. “Drink plenty of fluids, and avoid beverages that contain caffeine or alcohol. Additional measures to beat the heat include avoiding cooking, taking cool showers or baths, and wearing loose, light-colored clothing.”

The City is prepared for the warm spell, and there are plenty of spots around Boston at which residents can cool off. The Boston Centers for Youth & Families (BCYF) is opening a number of cooling centers, and certain pools will also be open for those wanting a reprieve from the warmth. The elderly and young children are cautioned to pay particular attention to the high temperatures, as are those with asthma, given the predicted humidity.

Please see the list provided below for BCYF community center and pool openings for Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8.

Because the BCYF Cooling Center / Pool Site List is subject to change, all City departments using this list must call the Mayor’s 24 Hour Services for updates on which BCYF sites are open during any/all Heat Emergencies.
