Former Member of Boston Police Brings Wealth of Experience to New Position

Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced today that he has appointed Donald E. McGough, J.D. as the City of Boston’s new Director of the Mayor’s Office of Emergency Preparedness. A civilian veteran of the Boston Police Department (BPD), Donald McGough brings extensive law enforcement and security experience to his new position.

“I am pleased to announce that Donald McGough will come on board as our new director of Emergency Preparedness,” Mayor Menino said. “Donald comes to us with extensive experience in both the public and private sectors that will be essential in keeping Boston at the forefront of emergency planning.”

The Director of the Mayor’s Office of Homeland Security/Emergency Preparedness, a member of the Mayor’s Cabinet, coordinates all emergency planning for the City of Boston, working with the leadership of the BPD, the Boston Fire Department, the Boston Public Health Commission and Boston Emergency Medical Services, the Boston Transportation Department and the Department of Public Works. As the new director, Donald McGough will oversee the management of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) for the Boston Metro region. Boston is the lead for the region that also includes Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Quincy, Revere, Somerville and Winthrop.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with Mayor Menino and leaders from the City’s public safety and public health departments to continue to grow and strengthen Boston’s emergency preparedness program,” McGough said. “I look forward to collaborating with our regional, state, and Federal partners to ensure that we are as prepared as we can be to prevent, respond to, and recover from emergencies.”

Prior to joining the Mayor’s Cabinet, McGough was a member of the BPD and later worked as a Senior Homeland Security Consultant at the Public Consulting Group, Inc. As a member of the BPD, McGough served as Assistant Chief of the Bureau of Administration and Technology and as Chief of Staff to the Police Commissioner. During the 2004 Democratic National Convention, McGough coordinated logistical operations. As a consultant, McGough coordinated his firm’s homeland security and emergency preparedness service for state and local government agencies and assisted local and regional homeland security consortiums with strategy, technology, implementation, emergency plan development, training and exercises.

A graduate of Northeastern University and New England Law School, McGough holds a B.S. in criminal justice, a J.D. and is admitted to the Massachusetts Bar.
