This spring, the City of Boston’s Rental Housing Resource Center (RHRC) will again welcome landlords throughout the city to take part in their free seminars. The seminars are targeted to owners who manage their own rental properties and own 2-6 unit buildings. The emphasis of the seminars will be on how to successfully maintain steady rental income and how to avoid pitfalls that cause interruption of necessary cash flow. Issues such as tenant selection, escrow accounts, and notice requirements will all be discussed in detail. The seminars will also highlight two other services provided by the RHRC, that of foreclosure prevention and mediation.
“The most important thing as a renter or landlord is to understand your rights and responsibilities,” Mayor Menino said. “And the city has many resources available for both. These seminars are another way for landlords to utilize the city’s expertise and resources to protect their investment.”
Landlord Seminar Schedule:
• Mon., May 7th, Murphy Community Ctr., 1 Worrell St., Dor., 6:30-8:30 p.m.
• Wed., May 9th, Harborside Community Ctr., 312 Border St. E. Bos. 6:30-8:30 p.m.

The Rental Housing Resource Center was created by Mayor Menino in 1995 to provide advice, information, and assistance to Boston landlords and tenants who have problems or questions about rental housing issues.
The Rental Housing Resource Center:
• Mediates housing-related disputes, free of charge. The RHRC has helped to resolve hundreds of landlord-tenant disputes in a non-threatening and non-partisan atmosphere.
• Provides information to landlords and tenants regarding their rights and responsibilities under the law, and answers questions on any rental housing matter.
• Administers a Safety-Net program, which provides income-eligible elderly or disabled tenants, who are living in formerly rent-controlled units, with a rent subsidy for up to 24 months.
• Assists eligible tenants who have lived in the same formerly rent-controlled units since November of 1994 in applying for Section 8 vouchers on the basis of loss of rent control.
• Publishes a free informational guide for landlords and tenants, entitled The Good Neighbors Handbook, which helps landlords and tenants understand and comply with the complex landlord/tenant laws. To view it online, click on “Good Neighbors Handbook” to the left.
• Educates landlords and tenants about rental housing matters through seminars and community meetings.
