Mayor Menino and Celtics Celebrate Life of Red Auerbach

Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino stood alongside former Celtics players Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, JoJo White and Robert Parish, and Senator Edward M. Kennedy and Governor Mitt Romney as they honored Arnold “Red” Auerbach in a tribute on City Hall Plaza today. Mayor Menino officially declared Wednesday, November 1, 2006 a “A Day in Memory of Arnold ‘Red’ Auerbach.”

“Put simply, Red was a legend. He was a rare person who brought people from all different walks of life together,” Mayor Menino said. “His basketball accomplishments are unparalleled. He brought sustained excellence to the City of Boston and created Celtic Pride. Red brought success to our city that has not been repeated, and gave Boston so much to be proud of.”

The President of the Boston Celtics, Red Auerbach passed away on Saturday, October 28th at the age of 89. From 1950-1966, Auerbach was the head coach of the Celtics and led them to nine world titles, including eight in succession from 1959-1966. His tenure includes many firsts for both the Celtics organization and the National Basketball Association. He was the first head coach to draft an African American professional basketball player. Auerbach was also the first basketball coach to start five African American players. And he hired the first African American coach, Bill Russell.

“Red helped changed the perception of Boston by showing us as a more tolerant city. And I think his actions helped pave the way for Boston to become the diverse city it is today,” Mayor Menino added.

Today, the Red Auerbach Youth Foundation, which was founded in 1985, honors Auerbach and funds youth athletic programs. One of Boston’s greatest sports legends, Auerbach believed that sports and athletics led to the healthy development, both physical and emotional, of children.
