Mayor Thomas M. Menino is pleased to announce the opening of a 200,000 square foot artificial turf field at Roberts Playground on Dunbar Street in Dorchester.
The field will be used for play by soccer, football, baseball, softball, and cricket teams. The new field is part of a capital improvement project at Roberts which also included the installation of new sports lighting with LED security lights, new fencing, new player benches, the addition of bleachers with 400 seats, addition of backstops, a new scoreboard, and new perimeter walkway.
The Mayor’s Capital Budget funded the approximately $3 million park improvements in order to replace natural grass with artificial turf and to replace outdated features. The drainage has been improved at the park and the artificial turf will allow for more cycles of use per year and quicker return to team play following rainstorms. Due to the size of the field area, two playing areas can be used at the same time by athletic teams.
The design budget for this project was $275,000 and the construction contract was $2,706,000.
